Have you recently thought, “Is my body broken?” Are you over forty? Have you been eating the same foods, or even better choices, and having more bloating, digestion issues, and weight gain, especially in the mid-section? When you apply your old tricks to slim down, are there no results?
Your body is not broken. But if you are over forty, your hormones are changing. As a result, the way food is processed in you body is different than it was when you were twenty and thirty. To ensure your long-term health, it is important to learn how to change with it.
How do our Hormones Change?
During our reproductive years, our hormones ebb and flow in a predictable pattern, staying within certain goldilocks boundaries. As we progress through perimenopause, our hormones swing higher and lower than ever before. Once we have completed the transition, they settle into a much lower level than they were in our reproductive years.
When our hormones are high or low, our bodies have a rough time processing sugar. As a result, sugar is more likely to be stored as fat than used for energy.
How do our Hormones Affect the Way Food is Processed?
The food we eat needs to be delivered to our cells to give them energy to work. Usually, the energy from food goes into our blood and then passes into the cells. When our hormones are very high or very low, the energy in our blood doesn’t pass into the cell as well. So, we end up with cells that are still hungry and too much energy in the blood.
We feel tired and hungry even if we have plenty of energy in our blood. The extra energy is stored as fat.
Which Foods Should We Watch out For?
Refined sugars and alcohol are the worst offenders in this storage loop. The more refined a food is, the faster it will be absorbed and the more likely it will be stored as fat. Additionally, this fat is more likely to be stored in the belly.
Alcohol is especially damaging. If a healthy dinner is consumed with a glass or two of wine, it isn’t possible for your body to separate the zucchini from the alcohol. So, that zucchini will be processed more like a simple sugar than if it were eaten without alcohol.
What Can We Do About It?
The key to success here is to focus on foods that are slow to absorb. The slower our energy enters our blood, the more time there is for the nutrients to be used in cells rather than stored. It is best to eat foods as close as possible to their natural state.
Movement is also a key to allowing our bodies to use the nutrients we consume. With movement, our muscles become like sponges, pulling nutrients from the blood. The more strenuous, the more thirsty our muscles become. Adding resistance training several times a week as well as light movement on a daily basis will help our bodies utilize the food we consume.
If sugar is bad, why not eat/drink artificial sweeteners?
Although these sweeteners are low in calories, our bodies ramp up as if they are about to process a bunch of sugar. When that sugar never arrives the body signals the brain to eat more and the food we do eat is processed differently.
It has been found artificial sweeteners can cause many metabolic problems. Strict NO to: Sucralose, Aspartame. Go very moderate on: Stevia leaf extract, monk fruit. Be sure to read labels. Most of the foods containing these sweeteners are highly processed and best to avoid in Peri/menopause.
So…I Never Get to Have Sugar / Alcohol Again?
Understanding what is happening in your body will help you make informed decisions and take away the frustration you feel, wondering why your body is responding differently than it has in the past. If you can learn to moderate your sugar and alcohol intake in a new way, you will feel better in your body. That feeling is longer-lasting, and better than any cookie or margarita.
