We all have WHYs to motivate different parts of our lives.  Here are a couple of mine:

WHY I work in fitness

I started working in fitness when I was 16 years-old because at fifteen I went from a total sedentary slug to a lover of movement.  It changed my life, and I was eager to share it with as many people as possible.  My mission became simple: to motivate people to move.  

Over the last two weeks, so many of the clients I train in small groups have made increases in the amount of weight they are lifting.  Their hard work and consistency is paying off and it shows in this strength gain, but also in the way they are feeling overall.  The great part: they love it.  We get together in the garage, chat, share, laugh, sweat, and swear when it gets tough. 

I love seeing a woman discover her strength and overcome intimidation she may feel toward her own abilities in the gym.  

WHY I coach nutrition and lifestyle changes

This one is deeply personal to me.  While I always loved to exercise, nutrition didn’t come as easily.  I spent my twenties as an overweight marathon runner and group fitness instructor.  I was so scared to really learn about nutrition because I couldn’t imagine eating less.  I was moving a ton and I was hungry!

Over the years, and with piles of education, I learned that eating less is not what it is about.  In fact, I now eat more, but I eat foods that support my workouts and nourish my body.  

I love leading a woman to discover this for herself and change the way she sees and feels about food.  I recently had a client who dropped over 15 lbs. in the past five month tell me she can’t remember what she used to eat and what she was afraid of giving up in the beginning.  There is nothing more thrilling for me than hearing success like that.

WHY I specialize in Perimenopause

Perimenopause is no joke.  Looking back on the last 9 years, I can clearly see my journey, but boy was it confusing while I was going through it.  All of the confusion and pain led to a lot of research, studying, and new certifications.  It clearly formed my mission to help women with their nutrition and exercise as they go though this change of life.  

In perimenopause, women tend to lose bone and muscle while gaining fat.  This sets them up for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and frailty, all of which will decrease their long term quality of life.  Bothersome symptoms make it more tempting to stay trapped under a blanket on the couch with a bowl of chips than slay a workout and cook well-balanced meals.  

With the stakes high and the obstacles higher, I take extreme satisfaction when my clients transform their lives.  I have had many women declare that they have never felt better, they are stronger than when they were in their thirties, and they are confident they can maintain their new health habits over the long term.  

WHY I developed Powerup and Reset

Powerup and Reset is an online health education program.  It walks you through two weeks of eliminating inflammation-causing foods from your diet, followed by an optional three week period of slowly adding them back in and learning what foods are especially bothersome to your body.

I developed this program for a couple of reasons:

  • Learning what foods cause inflammation takes away the mystery behind bothersome symptoms and allows us to make informed decisions about what we eat.
  • I have been leading groups of women through this type of reset for years and I know how well it works.
