Are You Really Ready to Hire a Health Coach?

Read this to Find Out.

Congratulations!  You are ready to take a huge step forward in seeking professional help to reach your goals.  

This says a couple of things about you:

  • Making a change is a priority to you right now.
  • You want to be efficient in making this change.
  • You have tried steps to make this change on your own and have not found success.

First, let’s clearly define your coach’s job.  Picture this journey to your goals as a trip through the woods.  In this scenario, your coach is a flashlight.  She is walking by your side and shining a light on the path just in front of your feet.  She can illuminate fallen trees and rocks in your path, but you will still be the one who needs to navigate over them.  If you come to a fork in the road, she can help talk through the pros and cons of which path to take, but ultimately, you will be the one who decides which path is going to be the right one for you.  If the chosen path, doesn’t work out, she will be right there to guide you back and find your way to path B.  

Leaving the woods, let’s look at where the coaching relationship fails.  In short, it is all about realistic expectations of what a coach can do for you.  Often clients dream that coaches possess a secret formula.  In this dream, the coach reveals the secret formula that delivers perfect health in a short period of time without much effort or the need to make any real changes.  The secret was there all along just out of sight! And it is easy! Unfortunately, this dream scenario does not exist. We would all love it if that were possible.  

Ideally, a coach will use research to help you make the best choices.  She will listen to you and be a partner in problem solving to help you fold these choices into your life.  Together you will slowly take step after step to build health habits that will last, knowing that at the end of the journey, the way you were moving and feeding your body will look much different at the end than it did when you started.

  • Be open to trying new things.
  • Recognize that in order to change your health, you will need to change your habits. (read here to understand why change is scary)
  • See your coach as a partner who is there to guide you, but know that every day it is ultimately your decision – meal by meal, workout by workout – that makes for success.

  • Believe that by paying a coach a magic and easy formula will be delivered to you that will take you to perfect health with little effort in a small amount of time.
