How Your Actions in Perimenopause Will Determine Your Health for the Rest of Your Life

The overall consensus on Perimenopause is: we are screwed for 3-5 years.  

We will gain weight, we will not sleep, we be crazy emotional, we will break into full-body sweats at embarrassing times, and there is nothing we can do about it.  

Eventually, we will get through it and things will calm down.  The plan of action seems to be, put your head down, as if boarding up your windows for an incoming hurricane, and wait it out, hoping that the sun will come out when the storm has passed. 

But in truth, we are all going to be doing SOMETHING while that storm is blowing.  Even if we stay in bed eating brownies, that is a choice of what to do.  Why not DO things that help rather than hurt your long term health?

Perimenopause is a profound change.  The hormones that drive your cycle affect every system of your body.  They go from what has felt normal to your body for thirty years, to a wildly fluctuating period of change, and then settle into a hormonal profile that is totally different from where they began.  

In the end, you are living in a very different body.

This period of transition comes with symptoms that deeply affect your daily life physically, mentally and emotionally.  It is a HARD transition.  But, it is an important one.  

While the storm is blowing, you have no choice but to get up every day and put one foot in front of the other.  You get to choose what foods you eat and what you do to move and care for your body.  

What you choose to do here matters.

Poor choices, like crash dieting, punishing hours of cardio, or crawling in bed with the tray of brownies, will accelerate physical changes like:

  • Loss of bone – osteoporosis
  • Decrease in muscle – sarcopenia
  • Increasing belly fat 
  • Risk of cardiovascular disease.  

These will decrease your long-term quietly of life.  

The goal in perimenopause should be to maximize our Health-span; the number of years we live in good health rather than being infirm.  

Choices that work with, rather than against, your hormones at this time can help reduce or reverse this loss of lean tissue and increase in body fat, setting you up for a the best possible health-span.  

This is a time for relentless and consistent action against the odds.  

Staying motivated, takes a clear reason WHY.  If you were to have a massive heart attack and were placed you on a strict eating plan, you would stick to it as if your life depended on it, because it does.  However, vanity goals, like looking good for a trip to the beach, never have the same level of compliance.  It is time to change your thinking.  

Let’s throw vanity out the window.  

Know that the way you choose to move, feed, and care for your body RIGHT NOW will have a HUGE impact on your quality of life moving forward.  

Forget about punishing and depriving yourself to reach a scale-based goal or look a certain way.  Discover the habits that will preserve and build your muscle and bone while stopping or reversing fat gain.  Then stick to those habits as if your life depends on it.  Your eighty-year-old self will thank you.
